It deserves its accolades because - it touches on a sensitive topic. That's about it. It is an exploitative film, just like Black was. The direction is lopsided - we don't see any interaction between the boy and the teacher. Strange isn't it. It makes us reach for our kerchiefs on a couple of times for sure but not enough to probably convince the jury. Compared to the Iranian or European film (Laurent Cantet's The Class or the late master Louis Malle's Le Enfant du Paradis) it pales because it is simplistic and not emotionally or cinematically nuanced. But I am glad Aamir tried it, but there are better Oscar worthy films than TZP. There are so many channels (FX, IFC etc) that screen international movies with sub-titles. TZP is a great choice - right from the storyline, the acting, to the music album, it completely stands out. No wonder Walt Disney Company has bought the home video rights for distribution of an international edition DVD for future release in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Incidentally, it is the first time ever an international studio has bought the rights for an Indian movie. How else could you explain "Devdas" and "Ekalavya:The Guard(retch retch)".
